Bangkal – Nauclea orientalis
Family: Rubiaceae
Description: A medium-sized evergreen tree growing up to 10-15m with a dimeter of up to 40cm. Trunk is grayish brown and flaking. Leaves are simple, rich green, ovate with prominent veins and wavy-edged margins. Flowers are showy, yellow or orange with white spikes. Fruiting season if from July-January and potato-like fruit is irregularly shaped and greenish-brown.
Distribution: Batan Island-Mindanao, South-east Asia, New-Guinea, NE Australia
Habitat: Found in secondary forests at low and medium altitudes.
Economic Importance: Used for light construction, interior works, furniture, yellow dye from bark, leaves have pharmaceutical uses, reforestation uses and urban greening.
Ecological Status: Not-threatened
