Batino – Alstonia macrophylla
Family: Lecythidaceae
Description: A tree reaching a height of 25m. The bark is smooth, pale gray. Flowers are small and yellowish-white.
Distribution: Found all over the Philippines.
Economic Importance: Medicinal, powder decoction of the bark, infusion, tincture, or wine preparation is used for fibrefuge, antidysenteries. Used for poultice. The wood is used for furniture and wooden clogs.
Ecological Status: Depleted due to logging and kaingin-making.
Batino is a hard wood? Is it really good to be used as material for furniture?
Hello Dong! We have more actual experience working with bamboo for furniture. As for Batino, we grow them for their landscaping value. There exists research literature which describes Batino as a harder wood than Dita. However, from some of my local friends from forestry, they share the opinion that batino is better for making clogs than furniture.
