Tamayuan – Strombosia philippinensis
Family: Olacaceae
Description: A large tree reaching 30m in height and a diameter of 70cm. The trunk is straight and unbuttressed, while the crown is dense and compact. The bark is yellow-gray, with fine, shallow fissures; outer bark is corky and brittle. Leaves are shiny, sometimes waxy, rounded with a sharp pointed tip.
Distribution: Widely distributed throughout the Philippines, Malay peninsula.
Habitat: Found on low hills, lands just above flood level up to 350m elevations.
Economic Importance: Wood is used for construction and cabinet work.
Ecological status: Depleted due to conversion of low forested areas into agricultural lands and kaingin-making.
